Faith Christian Church, formed by a small group of remnants coming together to form a loving, welcoming congregation.
This group yearned to worship in a non-judgmental, welcoming, spiritual atmosphere, loving one another and offering room at the table.
Their journey began on an Ash Wednesday having service together in a barn. They continued gathering there on Sunday mornings to worship. The people cried, “we want to be a church” and they did.
Doors opened for this group of Christ followers. Other congregations were willing to help by prayer and sharing their bylaws and constitution, guiding where to go for answers and for guidance. The regional board of Mid-America Disciples of Christ included them in the denomination, which is what this group of remnants desired. The regional ministers were encouraging and helpful.
Other DOC congregations helped financially and through prayer, sending Bibles, communion wear, candles, study aids and Bibles. They received choir robes, even had a personal delivery from Shenandoah Iowa of paintings and books. Churches from all over the region have been praying for this group, they are incredibly blessed. Starting out as less than a dozen gathering and quickly grew. It’s been a journey watching how God has worked in the life of this church.
They left the barn when encouraged to investigate a church building out of town that had been vacant. They were given permission to make any repairs or adjustments to the building and quickly began the work. Water lines needed to be replaced and electrical wiring fixed. They were excited that they had luxuries they did not have in the barn. They used their gifts to ‘bring her back to shining’.
Then an opportunity to share space in the beautiful facility in town where they now call home was presented to them. An established place of worship, where they would have room to grow, multiple bathrooms, easier access, free of potholes and low water creeks, and have a family life center.
The moment this now, not so little group gathers to worship, the love they have for one another and Jesus Christ is felt, acknowledged, and visible by all who enter their house of worship.
They sing their song every Sunday, each verse represents their journey so far from the barn to the prairie from the prairie to where they are now. They began as, and will continue to be, remnants, and from those remnants come beautiful tapestries, a group of people who remain loyal to God after a time of hardship and hard work.
“Every Sunday everyone is welcomed as an old friend. You can wear your fancy clothes or your chore clothes, there isn’t any judgment of others. Everyone shares the responsibility from greeter to server, housekeeper to worship leader. There have been bumps along the way, but our “holy hiccups” remind us that we are just imperfect humans. Church is much more than a building and we hope along the way we are able to make God smile.
